How to Lead Your
Child to Christ
Sometimes, parents feel intimidated by sharing the gospel with their kids. We want to provide you with some kid-friendly language you can use in conversations with your child. Here are some questions you can ask your kids to see where they are on their salvation journey!
Breaking any of God’s rules.
4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
– 1 John 3:4 (NIV)
Sin separates us from God.
2 It’s your sins that have cut you off from God.
Because of your sins, he has turned away
and will not listen anymore.
– Isaiah 59:2 (NIV)
Death is the consequence of sin.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
– Romans 6:23 (NIV)
Sending Jesus to die. He accepted our punishment, which was separation from God.
16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
– John 3:16 (NIV)
All of us are sinners and fall short of God’s standard.
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
– Romans 3:23 (NIV)
As you ask these basic questions, you can gauge your child’s comprehension of their need for salvation. Remember that it’s the Holy Spirit’s job to draw us to Christ. When your child is ready, you will know it and won’t have to force them. Each child must understand what sin is, the consequence of sin, and that Jesus paid the price for their sin, and then admit they have sinned.
Once your child understands each element and their need for salvation, ask them if they are ready to invite Jesus to be the boss of their life and take away their sins.
When they are ready, you can lead them through a simple prayer (1 John 1:9).
A. Admit that you are a sinner.
B. Believe that Jesus died on the cross for their sins.
C. Confess. This means they have to pray this prayer out loud and ask Jesus to take away their sins and come into their heart. You cannot pray this prayer for them.
After your child prays this prayer, CELEBRATE it BIG time!
Accepting Christ is the most significant decision they will make in their life; much bigger than deciding what they will be when they grow up. The Bible tells us that the angels are throwing a party in heaven (Luke 15:10)!
We encourage you, as their parent, to do these things as a follow-up:
1. CELEBRATE! Call at least three people and tell them the good news!
2. Put their spiritual birthday in your calendar and celebrate with them on the anniversary each year.
3. Make sure they have a Bible, and help them develop a routine to read God’s word regularly.
4. Come to Kid Life and tell the team! We have a salvation gift certificate and discipleship material that we want to put in their hands.
Satan wants you to think salvation is so complicated that only a pastor can lead you or your child to Christ. That’s a lie. Salvation is as simple as ABC! If you have questions or need some encouragement, we are here to support you. Please reach out to your local Kid Life pastor.
