Mark 12:28-31
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
This teacher asked a genuine question that we may have all asked at one point: What is the most important command? Jesus answered simply yet profoundly, saying the first command is to know that God is the one true God and to love Him with every facet of our being—heart, soul, mind,
and strength. The second one is to love your neighbor as yourself. The greatest command is not about the works we do to make ourselves worthy or holy, but it is about the posture of our hearts toward God and how we treat those around us.
God, I pray that I am able to live out the greatest command every day. Help me to love You, the one true living God, with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Guide my thoughts, words, and actions so they reflect Your love. Teach me to love my neighbor as myself. Give me the grace to see others through Your eyes, and help me to be understanding and compassionate. Let the way that I love others be a reflection of how You love me.
